Catch Assessment Surveys
KMFRI conducts bi-annual Catch Assessment Surveys (CAS) and Frame Surveys across all major Kenyan water bodies to monitor fish stocks, fishing effort, and socioeconomic conditions in fishing communities.
These surveys inform fisheries management policy, provide data for stock assessment models, and track changes in fish populations over time – covering Lake Victoria, the Rift Valley lakes, and major river systems.
Water Bodies Surveyed
Comprehensive fisheries monitoring across Kenya's major inland water systems
Lake Victoria
Kenya's largest lake and most productive freshwater fishery – biannual CAS and Frame Surveys track Nile perch, tilapia, and omena stocks across all landing sites.
Lake Turkana
The world's largest permanent desert lake – surveys monitor Nile tilapia, Nile perch, and catfish populations in this harsh arid-zone fishery.
Lake Baringo
Rift Valley lake fishery with unique biodiversity – surveys assess tilapia and catfish populations impacted by land use changes and sedimentation.
Lake Naivasha
Freshwater lake important for both fisheries and floriculture industries – routine monitoring of largemouth bass and tilapia populations.
