Researching Kenya's Aquatic Resources from Coast to Hinterland
The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute operates a network of research centres and field stations strategically located across the country, from the Indian Ocean coastline through the Great Rift Valley lakes to the shores of Lake Victoria. Each facility is equipped with specialised laboratories, field equipment, and expert staff dedicated to generating quality data that informs national fisheries management and policy.
One Network, Four Frontiers
From the Mombasa headquarters, KMFRI runs two research centres — Mombasa and Kisumu — that coordinate a national network of stations across Kenya's seas, lakes and rivers.
Coast & Indian Ocean
Marine and coastal research spanning the coastal hinterland, territorial waters and Kenya's Exclusive Economic Zone — with field stations at Mombasa, Gazi, Shimoni (NAMARET) and Lamu.
Lake Victoria Basin
The principal facility for Lake Victoria — the world's second-largest freshwater lake — coordinating fisheries and limnology research, supported by the Sangoro station.
Rift Valley Lakes
Dedicated stations monitor the ecology and fisheries of Lakes Baringo, Turkana and Naivasha — among Kenya's most distinctive inland water bodies.
Freshwater Aquaculture
Led by the Sagana centre of excellence with the Sangoro and Kegati stations — advancing fish farming, hatchery technology and food security.
