Overview

About Baringo

The Lake Baringo Research Station monitors the ecology and fisheries of Lake Baringo, a freshwater Rift Valley lake in Baringo County. Established in 1990, the station studies sedimentation, water-level fluctuations, water quality, and fish population dynamics in a lake that has experienced profound hydrological transformation in recent decades. Research at Baringo supports management of the tilapia and catfish fisheries that sustain lakeshore communities, and informs watershed management and lake-restoration initiatives.

Research Focus Areas

Rift Valley Lake Ecology

Physical, chemical, and biological monitoring of Lake Baringo, tracking changes in water levels, turbidity, and aquatic biodiversity.

Sedimentation Studies

Quantification of sediment inputs, turbidity trends, and their effects on fish habitat and photosynthetic production.

Tilapia & Catfish Fisheries

Population assessments, gear studies, and yield modelling for commercially important tilapia and catfish species in Lake Baringo.

Catchment Management

Linking catchment land-use practices to lake-water quality and fish productivity to inform integrated watershed management policies.
