The researcher began his scientific career in marine science in 1989 and has since been actively involved in numerous regional and international research projects. He successfully coordinated the Kenyan chapter of the IOC–UNESCO project on potentially harmful marine microalgae in Kenyan waters. He also contributed to the regional Coral Reef Degradation in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) project and participated in an international UV radiation project investigating the effects of changing irradiance patterns on microbenthic communities, including micro- and macro-algae and meiofauna in coral reef ecosystems affected by El Niño-related coral mortality. He is currently engaged in water quality bioassessment using macroinvertebrates in freshwater systems.
