Dr. Jacob Ochiewo, PhD, has 27 years of research experience in socioeconomics, natural resource policy analysis, development studies, governance analysis, value chain analyses, fish trade and marketing, ecosystem approach to Fisheries/Aquaculture, community training, livelihood analysis, preparation of policy briefs, and science communication.

As a Senior Research Scientist in the Socio-Economics Department at KMFRI's Mombasa Research Centre, Dr. Ochiewo specializes in Development Studies and Environmental Economics, providing critical social science perspectives that complement the Institute's biophysical research on marine and fisheries resources.

Dr. Ochiewo's work focuses on understanding the complex interactions between coastal communities and marine ecosystems, ensuring that fisheries management and conservation policies are socially equitable, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable.

  • Mariculture & Poverty Alleviation – Examined effects of situation analysis practices and monitoring & evaluation planning on implementation of poverty alleviation mariculture projects along the Kenyan coast (Marine Policy 2020; Aquatic Ecosystem Health & Management 2021)
  • Climate Change & Livelihoods – Assessed livelihood impacts and adaptation in fishing practices in response to recent climatic changes in the upwelling region under the East African Coastal Current (WIO Journal of Marine Science 2020)
