Charting Kenya's blue future through Marine Spatial Planning

April 1, 2025

Kenya's coastal and inland waters support multiple sectors including fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, and shipping. Growing population and economic expansion create competing demands on aquatic spaces.

Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is a science-based, participatory process that brings together all stakeholders to manage resource use fairly while protecting ecosystems.

The approach establishes designated zones where fishing, aquaculture, tourism, and transportation can coexist sustainably. The strategy emphasizes protecting critical habitats like coral reefs, mangroves, and fish breeding grounds.

Kenya's Cabinet approved the National Marine Spatial Plan in March 2024. An MSP Secretariat now coordinates implementation with national ministries, KMFRI, local communities, and civil society partners.
