WIOMSA 2025: KMFRI Leadership Graces Opening of 13th Scientific Symposium

The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute hosted the 13th Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) Scientific Symposium in Mombasa. The week-long triennial gathering brought together researchers, policymakers, and ocean professionals to discuss sustainable management of marine resources across the region.

The symposium theme was "One Ocean, One Future: Connecting People, Policy, and Science for a Thriving Western Indian Ocean." Board Chair Amb. Dr. Wenwa Akinyi Oranga emphasized that the event serves as a vital intersection where "science meets policy, where evidence informs investment."

Director General Dr. Paul S. Orina highlighted KMFRI's commitment to advancing regional collaboration on ocean conservation and fisheries sustainability.

Principal Secretary Betsy Njagi officially opened proceedings and launched The Kenya Exclusive Economic Zone Fisheries and Environment Report.
