Mud Crab Cages Empower Fishing Communities in Lamu
KMFRI partnered with the Northern Rangelands Trust to launch an innovative mud crab farming initiative in Mtagawanda village, Pate Island, Lamu.
KMFRI scientists, working alongside the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), have introduced floating mud crab cages to fishing communities in Mtagawanda village on Pate Island in Lamu County.
The project trains local fishers to raise mud crabs (Scylla serrata) in floating cages rather than harvesting them from the wild, improving livelihoods while reducing pressure on wild crab populations in mangrove ecosystems.
