Our Story

Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute

The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) is a state corporation established under the Science and Technology Act Cap 250 of 1979.

KMFRI is mandated to undertake research, development, and provide advisory services in marine and freshwater fisheries, aquatic ecosystems, and climate change in support of the Blue Economy.

As the leading research institution in Eastern Africa for aquatic sciences, we conduct cutting-edge research that informs sustainable management of Kenya's marine and freshwater resources – directly supporting national food security, economic growth, and environmental conservation.
