KMFRI Transitions to new Leadership: Dr. Mwaluma hands over to Dr. Orina
The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute announced a change in executive leadership on September 5, 2025. Dr. James Mwandawiro Mwaluma, serving as Acting Director General, officially transferred authority to Dr. Paul Sagwe Orina, the substantive Chief Executive Officer.
During his tenure, Dr. Mwaluma maintained institutional stability and strengthened research output. The institute secured additional funding, expanded innovation initiatives, and reinforced relationships with national academic institutions and regional bodies including the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association.
Dr. Orina brings extensive background in freshwater aquaculture research. His expertise spans inland fisheries management, particularly regarding Lakes Turkana and Naivasha.
The incoming leadership plans to elevate inland research stations to international prominence while maintaining the institute's coastal research reputation.
