Electronic Monitoring Piloted on Kenya's Fishing Vessels
Kenya has successfully piloted electronic monitoring (EM) systems on commercial fishing vessels, achieving 80% trip coverage and generating high-quality catch data.
A joint KMFRI and State Department of Fisheries pilot programme has deployed Electronic Monitoring (EM) systems — combining cameras, sensors, and GPS trackers — on a sample of Kenya's commercial fishing fleet operating in EEZ waters.
Preliminary results show 80% trip coverage with automated catch identification accuracy exceeding 85%, providing a cost-effective complement to at-sea observer programmes for fisheries compliance and stock assessment.
