Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), a State Corporation under the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,   State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries, was established by an Act of parliament (The Science and Technology Act Cap. 250 of the Laws of Kenya of 1979) which has since been repealed by The Science, Technology and Innovation Act No.28 of 2013.
 
KMFRI's mandate is to undertake research in "marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research including chemical and physical oceanography", in order to provide scientific data and information for sustainable development of the Blue Economy. The Institute is also mandated to cooperate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programmes and on matters of relevant research.
 
The Institute has Research Centers and Stations located at Mombasa, Kisumu, Naivasha, Baringo, Kegati, Sangoro, Sagana, Turkana, Mutonga, Shimoni, a research substation at Gazi and the Nairobi liaison office.
 
KMFRI is seeking to recruit externally self-motivated professionals who are team players to fill the following vacant positions.

1. KMF/1 Vacancy: Junior Clerk - Eleven (11) Posts

Terms of Service: Casual

Duties and Responsibilities

An officer at this level may be deployed in any of the following units/sections: Laboratory Services; Human Resource Management, General Registry, Supply Chain Management; Corporate Communication; and Finance and Accounting. The officer will be required to carry out simple duties under the supervision and guidance of a senior officer.

Specific duties and responsibilities will entail:

  1. Collecting statistical records;
  2. Carrying out transactions related to accounts or personnel information;
  3. Filing receipts;
  4. Receiving, filling and dispatching correspondence;
  5. Preparing pay change advices (PCAs);
  6. Preparing initial documents for issuance of stores;
  7. Photocopying and scanning documents;
  8. Indexing of documents and records; and
  9. Checking general office cleaning; and keeping safe custody of equipment, documents and records.
  10. Collection of fisheries and aquaculture data
  11. Cleaning of laboratories, fish ponds, cages and aquaria;
  12. Feeding of fish in fish ponds, cages and aquaria
  13. Video coverage on DSLR’s and camcorders
  14. Photography on DSRL’s
  15. Editing features documentaries and social media content on video and audio.
  16. Outdoor and in indoor XLR cable set up.
  17. Outdoor and in indoor lighting setup.
  18. Video and audio conversion for YouTube, TV, and social media.
  19. Manage inhouse audiovisual inventory

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, a candidate must be in possession of: –

  1. Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade C- (Minus) or its equivalent qualification; and
  2. Certificate in computer application skills from a recognized institution.

2. KMF/2 Vacancy: Driver - Two (2) Posts

Terms of Service: Casual

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties will entail: Driving and maintaining government vehicles at the station. This function will also entail detecting common mechanical faults on the motor vehicles; carrying out minor maintenance including oiling and greasing; maintaining daily work tickets for vehicles; ensuring the safety of vehicles on and off the road and maintaining the vehicles' cleanliness.

Requirements for Appointment

  1. At least a mean grade D+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  2. Must be a Kenyan citizen.
  3. Must have a valid driving license free from any current endorsements.
  4. Passed Suitability Test for Driver Grade III.
  5. At least One (1) year driving experience.
  6. First-Aid certification from a recognized institution.
  7. computer applications certificate from a recognized institution.
  8. Passed Practical Test for Driver’s conducted by KMFRI Transport Unit.
3. KMF/3 Vacancy: Reverse Osmosis Machine Operator - One (1) post

Terms of Service: Casual

Duties and Responsibilities

Main duties will be to attend to the reverse osmosis machinery and also assist in the general maintenance and servicing of the equipment, machinery and water piping systems in the station.

Minimum requirements for Appointment.

  1. Must have a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent.
  2. Must have proven skills and knowledge in plumbing and water plant operations.
  3. Must be a Kenyan citizen.
  4. Must have knowledge of reverse osmosis plant machinery and equipment.
  5. Working experience of 3 (three) years and above in a similar or comparable position
