Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), a State Corporation under the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries, was established by an Act of parliament (The Science and Technology Act Cap. 250 of the Laws of Kenya of 1979) which has since been repealed by The Science, Technology and Innovation Act No.28 of 2013.
KMFRI's mandate is to undertake research in "marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research including chemical and physical oceanography", in order to provide scientific data and information for sustainable development of the Blue Economy. The Institute is also mandated to cooperate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programmes and on matters of relevant research. The Institute has Research Centers and Stations located at Mombasa, Kisumu, Naivasha, Baringo, Kegati, Sangoro, Sagana, Turkana, Mutonga, Shimoni, a research substation at Gazi and the Nairobi liaison office.
KMFRI is seeking to recruit INTERNALLY self-motivated professionals who are team players to fill the following vacant positions within her approved staff establishment:
- KMF/1. Assistant Director, Administration (KMFRI Grade 4) - Post(s)– One (1)
(a) Duties and responsibilities of the officer entail:-
- Advising management on administrative policies, procedures and regulations;
- Providing leadership in the development and implementation of administration plans and budgets, within and outside the department in order to ensure efficient and cost-effective provision of and Administration services throughout KMFRI;
- Responsible on day-to-day operations on transport activities through authorizing official engagement to ensure smooth and timely operation;
- Developing and implementing administration policies and strategy, by enforcing relevant institutional regulations to achieve the desired efficiency in the utilization of human capital;
- Preparation of annual operating budgets and work plans for the administrative department and establish proper internal monitoring and control systems;

- KMF/2. Principal Research Scientist (Aquaculture) (KMFRI Grade 4) - Post(s)– One (1)
(a) Duties and responsibilities in this position will entail:
- Advising the Director on matters of research and development in respective directorate;
- Participating in developing aquatic and allied natural resources, research and development policies;
- Participating in the coordination of research and development activities in high profile international fora and publications;
- Developing and coordinating medium to large sized multi-disciplinary research teams;
- Identifying opportunities for international profile and reputation of the institute;

(a) Duties and responsibilities in this position will entail:
- Developing assurance engagement plans including identification and documentation of engagement objectives, engagement risks, materiality, sampling criteria, sample sizes and budgets.
- Monitoring progress of audit engagements to ensure that they are within time and financial budgets.
- Directing engagement opening and closing meetings with clients to ensure expectations are clearly identified, assessed, and met.
- Consolidating audit findings and recommendations documented by engagement team members and drafting and audit report for review by the Assistant Director, Internal Audit.

(a) Duties and responsibilities in this position will entail:
- Participating in design, development and implementation of proper accounting systems to ensure that internal controls are in place to safeguard the Institute financial resources from all forms of misuse;
- Preparing of statutory and other financial reports for management review and onward submission to the relevant authorities;
- Preparing periodic management reports to assist in Management decision making;
- Participating in budget preparation;
- Ensuring that financial expenditure is planned, controlled and properly authorized;

- Experience in operating oceanographic instruments such as Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) meters, marine robots and towed or self-powered underwater vehicles, hydro-acoustics equipment, current meters etc;
- Experience in the development of regional ocean models is essential. Prior modelling experience with Regional Oceans Modeling System (ROMS) will be an advantage;
- Experience in the analysis of satellite and tide-gauge sea level observations;
- Excellent data analysis and data visualization skills. Good technic al skill in Linux shell scripting/ Python/ MATLAB/ RDI and Nortek software or similar packages is essential;
- Experience in conducting surveys in vessels at sea;
- BSc in Environmental Science, Aquatic Sciences and Physical Sciences;
- Master’s in Physical Sciences/Oceanography from a recognized university OR Masters in Environmental Science with advanced training in Physical Oceanography;

- Ensuring continuous electricity and water supply;
