During his tenure, Dr. Mwaluma has steered KMFRI to remarkable stability, enhanced research delivery, and sustained growth. Under his leadership, the institute registered impressive achievements in advancing marine and fisheries research, securing new funding opportunities, and broadening the scope of innovation. His stewardship strengthened KMFRI’s collaborations with national research and academic institutions, while cementing its presence in regional bodies such as the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA). These strides have reinforced KMFRI’s reputation as a trusted leader in generating knowledge and solutions for the sustainable management of Kenya’s aquatic environment comprising riverine, lacustrine, coastal and marine resources.

Welcoming the new CEO, KMFRI is pleased to note that Dr. Paul Sagwe Orina brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven record of excellence. As Head of Freshwater Aquaculture Research at the Sangoro and Kegati stations, Dr. Orina has spearheaded transformative programs that boosted aquaculture productivity, enhanced community livelihoods, and provided evidence-based policy recommendations. His extensive expertise in freshwater fisheries research, notably on Lakes Turkana and Naivasha, has positioned him as a thought leader in the sustainable management of inland fisheries.
As KMFRI charts its next phase, Dr. Orina’s leadership is expected to elevate the institute’s inland research stations to global recognition, ensuring that their contribution to Kenya’s Blue Economy matches the prominence already achieved by the Mombasa Headquarters. His vision will focus on strengthening scientific research, fostering innovation, and expanding partnerships that empower communities and secure the resilience of aquatic ecosystems.
KMFRI Board of Management, staff, and partners express their gratitude to Dr. Mwaluma for his exemplary service and dedication, and warmly welcome Dr. Orina as he assumes his new role to steer the institute to greater heights.
