Dr. Mirera is a Senior Research Officer and Mariculture Expert working for KMFRI and leads a team of dedicated scientists in mariculture. Is the brianchild of silvofishery and community mariculture development in Kenya and the Western Indian Ocean Region. Has humble experience in milkfish, mud crab, prawns and mangrove integration. Recently developed an innovation to farm freshwater Nile tilapia in marine waters. Has provided advice in development of mariculture to different countries in the Western Indian Ocean region and to different mariculture investors globally. Has attracted significant research and development funding Nationally, Regionally and Globally. He is a practicing EIA Associate Expert. A publication history of over 20 peer reviewed papers and books and a reviewer in 5 high impact Journals. The broad research interests include; aquaculture innovations (systems, feeds and seed), field and lab based participatory research, capacity building and extension, silvofiheries, mangrove fisheries ecology and community development in all areas of aquaculture/maricultures. Currently Assistant Director Mariculture with a responsibility to enhance innovative research to tap into the blue economy potential.
